PSA Tapes

Pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSA) tape is a material that is permanently sticky on one or more sides. The adhesive on the tape needs to be tacky at room temperature without needing heat activation, water, or a solvent. The pressure-sensitive tape will stick to most surface types once compression is applied.

Pressure-sensitive tapes have multiple uses and applications. Determine the tape usage to assess the properties needed. For example, some tape solutions work best on rough surfaces, while others will stick better to smooth surfaces.

Adhesive Tape Usage

Pressure-sensitive adhesive tapes have multiple uses, including:
  • Package and box sealing: packing, masking, and scotch tape are all examples of pressure-sensitive tape. They are commonly used to seal boxes or close envelopes.
  • Electrical work: Electrical tape is a type of pressure-sensitive tape that insulates wires and cables.
  • Athletic gear: Athletic tape allows athletes to grip their equipment better, such as a tennis racket or hockey stick.
  • Heat containment: Pressure-sensitive tape can help insulate materials or protect against heat exposure.
  • Surface protection: The tape can protect surfaces from moisture damage or exposure to ultraviolet rays.
  • Sound dampening: Some pressure-sensitive tape effectively blocks or minimizes sounds.
  • Medical uses: Pressure-sensitive adhesive tape also has medical uses. Adhesive bandages are an example, as is the tape used to hold the gauze in place around a wound.
  • Scrim Tape Uses: Scrim adhesive tape is an essential tool for any building project requiring filling gaps between plaster.

What are the Advantages of Adhesive Tape?

Pressure-sensitive adhesive tape offers multiple advantages over other types of adhesive materials. Some reasons to use pressure-sensitive tape include the following:
  • Bonds a wide range of materials: Pressure-sensitive tape can join various materials together, including rough surfaces to smooth ones or smooth surfaces to other smooth surfaces. The tape can successfully bond dissimilar materials.
  • Improves comfort: The tape can help improve comfort in several ways. It absorbs vibrations, reduces sound, and provides insulation. Homeowners can use this tape to seal off drafty areas of their homes, allowing for better temperature control.
  • Reduces energy use: Pressure-sensitive tape can help reduce energy usage, leading to lower heating or cooling bills when used to seal homes and buildings.
  • Easy to use: Pressure-sensitive tape requires only a tiny amount of pressure to adhere, making it much easier to use than adhesives that need a solvent, water, or heat activation.
  • Offers aesthetic appeal: Pressure-sensitive adhesive tape is available in a range of colors and can come with printed logos. It can be a more attractive option than other types of fasteners.

Pressure-Sensitive Adhesive Tape Construction

Most of Magnum's tape products are manufactured in one of these typical configurations:
  • Single-coated: Single-coated tape has adhesive on one side. A release liner covers the adhesive side of the tape until it's ready for use.
  • Double-coated: Double-coated tapes have adhesive and release liners on each side. Depending on the tape's use, the adhesive may be the same on each side or different.
  • Differential double-coated: Differential double-coated tape has two different types of adhesive on each side.
  • Self-wound: Self-wound tape has adhesive on one side but no release liner. Packing tape is a typical example of self-wound tape.
  • Transfer tape/free film: Transfer tape or free film is an adhesive film applied to a release liner. The tape adheres well to irregular surfaces and is often used to create vinyl decals.

Pressure-Sensitive Adhesive Tape Features

Depending on your needs, we can produce adhesive tape products with various features.

Release Liners
Standard and custom-release liner options are available that best suit your specific application:
  • Several thicknesses and release factors are available
  • Single-liner or double-liner construction is available on transfer tapes

Adhesive Options
We use three types of adhesives when manufacturing pressure-sensitive tape. The type of adhesive that best meets your needs depends on the application.

1. Permanent Rubber

Rubber is the most cost-effective adhesive for pressure-sensitive tape and is either made from natural rubber or synthetic material. Each type has unique benefits and drawbacks. Synthetic rubber tends to adhere to surfaces more firmly, creating a permanent seal.

Since rubber isn't naturally sticky, resins get added to the material to produce tackiness.

2. Removable Rubber

Removable rubber adhesives are typically made from natural rubbers, which have a shorter life span and poorer heat performance than synthetic rubbers. You can easily reposition tapes with removable rubber adhesives or peel the tape off cleanly when it's no longer needed.

3. Permanent, Low-Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) Acrylic

Acrylic adhesives typically have a longer life span than rubber. Acrylic adhesives produce a tape with higher resistance to wear and tear than rubber PSA tapes. The adhesive bond is also stronger with acrylic than with rubber.

Unlike rubber, acrylic is a tacky material naturally, but adding a tackifier enhances the material's adhesive properties.

Two types of acrylic adhesive are available:
  • Solvent: Solvent acrylic tape is tackier than rubber but doesn't bond well to low-surface energy (LSE) plastics.
  • Emulsion: Emulsion acrylic is more cost-effective than solvent acrylic but less water-resistant.

Slitting
Magnum has the capacity to slit PSA tapes and films to suit your needs:
  • Finished slit widths range from ¼" to 60"

How to Choose the Right Pressure-Sensitive Adhesive Tape

The tape suitable for your application depends on various factors. When choosing Pressure-Sensitive Adhesive tape, consider the following:

  • The surface: Certain adhesive types bond to others more readily. For example, look for tape that sticks to foam if you need to adhere something to foam. Also, pay attention to the texture of the surfaces and choose a tape designed for rough or smooth exteriors, as required.
  • The conditions: Consider the situations where the product will be used. If you need to use the tape outdoors, choose a product that can withstand hot and cold temperatures, wind exposure, and moisture exposure.
  • The use: Think of your goal for using the tape. Are you using it to seal a package or join two surfaces together?
  • Permanence: Decide whether you need a removable or permanent adhesive. Removable adhesives don't have the bonding strength that permanent ones do, but they can also cause damage when you remove them.
  • Size: Do you need wide adhesive tape or something thinner?
